April 3rd update:\u00a0<\/strong>Many rooms have filled up, particularly woodwinds such as flute, clarinet and saxophone.\u00a0However,<\/strong> there are still a handful of slots available in the “Double Reed… Overflow Woodwind Room.” The clinician in that room is Heather Davis and she is extremely qualified to work with all musicians, especially all woodwind players. If those slots fill up before you are able to register, our clinicians in both the percussion and the high brass rooms are highly qualified retired band directors with years of proven experience teaching all instruments as well. These would be great options.<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, the option for professional recording has been closed as all available slots have been filled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The following information should be read and understood before<\/em><\/strong> you submit your form. The information below will help<\/em> with your planning and preparation.<\/p>\n

Important Notes about the Festival:<\/p>\n

  • This festival is for performers (ages 8-18) with one year or more experience who want to perform a Solo or with a small group and receive a formal musical evaluation. All Band students are encouraged to participate.<\/li>\n
  • Performance Time. You<\/strong><\/em> pick your performance time! (times are available on a first-come, first-served basis). Have a backup time ready. The sooner you register, the more likely your requested time will be available.<\/li>\n
  • The names and instruments of your group, if applicable.<\/li>\n
  • The name and number of your accompanist.<\/li>\n
  • The name and number of your private teacher.<\/li>\n
  • You must register for each soloist or group. If you are performing a solo and separately with a group, that is two entries.<\/li>\n
  • Entries must be paid for with a credit card when you submit your registration, there are no refunds.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n

    FAQ’s for Solo & Small Ensemble Festival – April 26, 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n

    What literature should I select?<\/strong>
    \nThe music for this festival should be from the “classical” world of music. Your music selection should be separate from movie theme music, show tunes, or jazz literature. There are many method books and solo literature options out there.<\/p>\n

    Does the Judge Need Original Music?<\/strong>
    \nYes. You will need to provide your Festival Judge with the original copy of the music you are performing. Performers may use a copy; the judge should have the original. If the piece is from an online source, you will need to verify whether the music was purchased or is allowed to be used in this setting by the composer.<\/p>\n

    How long should I perform?<\/strong>
    \nPerformances may range from 2 – 7 minutes, even less with beginner-level performers. The longer you perform, the less time you have for follow-up from your adjudicator.<\/p>\n

    Does my solo have to be accompanied by a piano?<\/strong>
    \nNo, however, pianos will be available, including the recording space. We can help you find one if needed.<\/p>\n

    Does my solo have to be memorized?<\/strong>
    \nMemorization is not required. However, memorization is appropriate for more advanced performers.<\/p>\n

    Who will attend my performance?<\/strong>
    \nYour private teacher, parents, grandparents, and maybe a friend or two who want to attend. Only those you wish to attend will be in the room with you and the judge.<\/p>\n

    Why should I consider the Recording Add-On?<\/strong>
    \nThe recording is an excellent tool to help you evaluate and appreciate your performance. The add-on is a high-end, 24-bit professional recording. It will be wonderful to revisit and listen several years from now.<\/p>\n

    Will I receive a rating?<\/strong>
    \nYes, and they will not be posted publicly. You will receive an evaluation with comments on the judge’s sheet. And your adjudicator will follow up with you verbally. Again, keeping your program shorter allows for more interaction with your judge.<\/p>\n

    Will I receive a Medal based on my rating?<\/strong>
    \nYes, those who rated their performances as Superior or Excellent received their medals at the festival based on their rating. All performers receive a Certificate of Participation.<\/p>\n

    Will there be food and snacks available?<\/strong>
    \nThere will be great food and snacks available for purchase.<\/p>\n

    Festival Details:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    What: The Colorado Youth Bands 4th Annual Solo & Small Ensemble Festival.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    When:\u00a0 Saturday, April 26, 2024, from 9 am to 3 pm. As registrations increase, we will open the times from 8 am to 9 am and from 3 pm to 4 pm if necessary.
    \n<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Where: Falcon Bluffs Middle School, 8449 S Garrison St, Littleton, 80128.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Cost: There are two tiers of pricing. Member pricing is for current students of Colorado Youth Bands. Non-Member pricing is for students not enrolled with Colorado Youth Bands for Spring 2025.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    The entry fee includes a 15-minute performance and evaluation time slot. Verbal and written feedback from your adjudicator. Participation recognition and Medals for Excellent and Superior Performances. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

    • Duets and Ensembles – $25 for the first performer; add $10 per additional performer.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n

        Credit Card Payment is due when you submit your registration. Your registration is only complete once the payment is successfully processed. <\/strong><\/p>\n
